All therapy starts with a thorough assessment to understand the client's full spectrum of functioning followed by collaborative creation of positive goals. To reach these goals, I draw upon evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, family based therapy, interpersonal therapy, guided-imagery, relaxation, and biofeedback. I communicate with referring providers about these goals, and with the client's consent, provide progress updates and areas of improvement.
For patients with a chronic illness, I take a team approach to treatment and often work with primary care providers, adolescent medicine teams, nutritionists, and any other health care provider that is involved in the patient's care.
By focusing on the individual, family, and life-context within which the symptoms have arisen, and emphasizing positive change, clients not only experience reductions in symptoms, but develop positive coping skills that can be applied to many other areas of life.
Areas of clinical focus include:
*Expertise in diabetes including managing diabetes distress, difficulty with management, anxiety, family conflict, dual-diagnosis of diabetes and eating disorders, and family based therapy.
*Chronic health management for children and adults such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, pain disorders, cancer, neurological disorders, and migraines.
*General mental health management for children and adults such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, self-esteem and family therapy.
*Cultural adaption for families such as stress surrounding acculturation, conflict between parents and youth at different stages of acculturation, and maintaining dual identities.
